 What Is Functional Medicine?
Minimize

Functional medicine is fine tuned and tailored to the specific patient.  Fatigue in one patient would not be treated the same as in another patient. Asthma in one patient would not be treated the same as in another patient.  A behavioral disorder in one patient would not be treated the same as in another patient.  In functional medicine, the focus is also on the entire family unit and how the environment plays into the patient’s treatment.  There is a heavy focus on nutrition, as well,  and how it impacts the biochemistry of the body.  The investigation of the disease process in functional medicine involves looking at the specific biochemical abnormalities in ways that standard laboratory analysis cannot do.  This involves highly specialized testing sometimes looking at the very detailed reactions that take place on a microscopic (and even smaller) level.  These reactions, if altered cause damage in one’s body in the form of illness or chronic disease.  Taking supplements that replace the “problem” on this microscopic level will often alleviate or cure the disease, even if it’s a simple “one time” problem,  or a more serous, chronic issue.

If you feel that your child could benefit from an evaluation from a functional medicine approach, please call our office for a free phone consultation.  If I feel that he or she may benefit from functional medicine, I will bring you and your child in for an hour long appointment to discuss your concerns.  We will then come up with a plan on how best to diagnose him or her (if necessary) and the plan of action/treatment.
